Savitribai Phule was an Indian social reformer and poet. She was born in 1831 in Naigaon, in a farming family. Sheworked to abolish discrimination and unfair treatment of people based on caste and gender. Along with her husband, Jyotirao Phule, she played an important role in improving women's rights in India during the British rule. Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao Phule founded the first girls' school run by native Indians in Pune at Bhide Wada in 1848. They taught children from different castes and opened a total of eighteen schools. As part of the Satyashodhak Samaj, they organized intercaste marriages without a priest and dowry, and at a minimum cost. Savitribai Phule wrote many poems against discrimination and advised people to get educated. Two of her books of poetry were published after her death, namely: Kavya Phule and Bavan Kashi Subodh Ratnakar.
