As human life changes, nature changes herself from winter to spring, from spring to summer from summer to rains and so on. In this cyclic order of change in seasons generally Baisakh and Jyaistha are considered two summer months in Bengal. To us summer is the first season. It comes at the beginning of the Bengali New Year and covers the months of April and May in the Christian calendar.
With the appearance of summer we observe remarkable changes in nature. The sun emits scorching fire. People are to suffer from unbearable heat. The earth gets very dry and cracks are seen here and there. Ponds and wells dry up. Trees and plants wither and become colourless. Nature looks very poor and lifeless. There is scarcity of drinking water in the villages and urban areas as well. People are attacked with diseases like Cholera, Typhoid and Dysentery. The farmers are in dejected mood and invoke the rain god. Violent storms occasionally break out and cause great damage.
In summer, there are vacations in schools and colleges. There fire heavy rush of people in Darjeeling, Nainital, Simla for passing summer days in those hill stations. The summer in West Bengal is best known for Paila Baisakh and Panchise Baisakh. The first day of Baisakh is the beginning of the New Year. It is a great day of festival to the Bengalees. We celebrate the birthday of our great poet Rabindranath Tagore on Panchise Baisakh (25th day Baisakh). In Bengal summer is the season of palatable fruits like Mangoes, Lichis, Jackfruits are available all in summer.
