This famous old adage lays down one of the fundamental truths of life. Of all the resources at man’s disposal, the most precious is time. Time is an all powerful phenomenon. Man is but a mere speck of dust before it. Man has no control whatsoever on the passage of time. Time once lost can never be got back at any cost.
The maxim ‘Time is Money’ was brought first into use by Benjamin Franklin. It has come to stay as the ultimate watchword in the corporate world. Money is greatly valued by man. Most of his efforts are directed towards earning money either for meeting the basic necessities of life or for adding to his material comforts. It causes him pain to lose money. Therefore, this allegorical reference brings out the importance of time in one’s life.
In modern management education, time management is an important area of study. Time is directly proportional to productivity. Every moment spent in laborious pursuits results in inflow of money into the organisation. More productive time would mean monetary profit for the organisation whereas loss of time results in loss of money.
Money, if spent in the right manner, brings in prosperity. The same holds true for time. Investing time in useful activities brings in achievements in the long run. One should be stingy with one’s time and not waste a single moment. While lost money can be recovered in due time, there is no way one can get back lost time. Time can be used to make money. But no money in the world can buy time. So, time is in fact more valuable than money.
The world runs on the wheels of time. Be it the newspaper that comes to your doorstep everyday without fail or your favourite programme on television, everything is brought to you in time by a system of dedicated individuals who race against the ticking of the clock to finish their work. Even if one person in the system was to falter, the system suffers. Imagine what would happen if one fine day the local trains were to stop running on time? Or what if, for that matter, your daily milk supply was to be delayed? Life would be completely thrown out of gears.
Time management is important at every stage and walk of life. Conducting big events such as the Olympics, demands high levels of time management and clockwork approach. Administrative and governing bodies, media houses, business organisations and educational institutions, everywhere time assumes the greatest importance. Time management brings in discipline and dynamism. It gives a boost to one’s self esteem resulting in better performances. The knowledge that you have spent your time cleverly gives satisfaction. It is a given that time will reward those who make wise use of it.
This is an era of multitasking. One is expected to fulfil different responsibilities and play multiple roles. One has to strike a balance between one’s personal and professional life. He cannot afford to neglect either. Nor can he shy away from the various social obligations. All this calls for excellent management of time.
A person’s worth is largely determined by his attitude towards time. One’s deference to time is an indicator of one’s commitment. One who turns up late on every occasion is not taken very seriously whereas one who adheres to time commands respect. And rightly so, for those who respect time are reliable to carry out important tasks. They are an asset to any organisation. Such people are competent enough to meet the deadlines in today’s competitive world. Inability to produce output in time would mean loss of goodwill for the company, which in turn would mean loss of money. Time means everything to an organisation’s credibility and its growth.
The paucity is that of time and not of talented and hardworking individuals who are ready to put in effort. What sets the best apart from others is the ability to meet deadlines while not compromising with the quality of work. While many students work hard for an examination, the ones who excel are the ones who are able to complete their preparation within time.
While hard work may be the key to success, it has to be coupled with efficient time management for it to yield the best result. “We don’t have an eternity to realize our dreams, only the time we are here,” said Susan Taylor. If you are unable to accomplish a particular task within a stipulated time, you will not get the desired outcome despite having put in your best efforts.
The biggest hindrance against time management is the lethal tendency of putting off one’s work to a later time. Procrastination should be feared and avoided like a deadly disease. Remember, tomorrow never comes. Once the germ of procrastination enters into the psyche, it is very difficult to get rid of it. We tend to not take work seriously and a lot of time slips by in the process. By the time we realise we have spent time doing nothing, it is too late and there is nothing for it but to repent.
