Magnesium Ribbon is Mg or pure Magnesium. When we burn this, it absorbs Oxygen from the surroundings and creates an Ash called Magnesium Oxide. Once mixed with water, this will form Magnesium Hydroxide, called Milk of Magnesia, a common solution for Acidity.

AIM : To study the burning of a Magnesium ribbon.
Materials Required : Magnesium ribbon , China dish.
Procedure :
1. Take a small piece of magnesium ribbon.
2. Clean its one end with a fine sand paper.
3. Hold it with a pair of tongs and heat the cleaned end in a candle flame.
Observation A : Magnesium ribbon burns rapidly with dazzling white light .
4. Collect the ash in a dry China dish.
5. Dissolve the ash collected in the China dish in a small amount of water.
Observation B : It turns red litmus to blue.
Conclusion :
1. Magnesium burns when heated in air to form a new substance called magnesium oxide .
2. Magnesium oxide when dissolved in water gives a basic solution because it changes red litmus to blue.
