Some bacteria, that live in the soil, water or in in association with some plant roots or leaves and some algae (like Rhizobium) have the ability to use the atmospheric nitrogen and fix it. As these organisms are living, this process is known as biological nitrogen fixation.

The nitrogen fixing bacteria is called rhizobium. It is found in the root nodules of leguminous plants. It fixes atmospheric nitrogen into absorbable liquids which is perfect for the plants to absorb. It has a major role in nitrogen cycle. If there is no rhizobium present then there will be a deficiency of nitrogen in plants.
