Esters are the compounds of general formula RCOORˈ, formed by the reaction of carboxylic acids with alcohols. RCOOH + RˈOH → RCOORˈ (ester) + H₂O They posses sweet odour so, that they are used in cosmetics. Ex: Reaction of ethanoic acid with ethyl alcohol produces ethyl acetate. Formation of ethyl acetate (ester) indicates sweet smell. CH₃COOH + C₂H₅OH →CH₃COOC₂H₅ + H₂O
