Subject: The grim reality of increasing crimes against women.
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily newspaper, I like to highlight my deep concern over the increasing crimes against women in our cities, towns and villages
The increase in crimes against women are going unnoticed. There is no proper data and information on crimes against women are conflicting. There are numerous cases where reporting a crime against women are shrugged off. In some cases the unfortunate victims are compelled to go through more traumatic experience at the hand of those who are supposed to be the protectors.
Crimes against women have created a poor image of India among foreign countries. Millions of foreign tourists visit India every year and the reports of growing crimes against women directly affect the tourism industry. It is a matter of great shame that when our country is marching towards super power in an all-round development, the barbaric acts against women are on the rise.
Our fundamental duties under Article 51A of the Constitution also include the provision that it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women. However, crimes against women are increasing. It is appalling to read news reports of how police continue to be insensitive to hapless victims of outraged modesty and their families. It seems even our public places and transport are unsafe for women. Even in the presence of substantial evidences, the criminals are set free on bail. These criminals have absolutely no regards for the law of the land.
The Government must form special police cells with women officers and other police personnel to receive reports about crime against women and take severe actions against the culprits. More women need to be recruited into our police forces.
The Government must also pass and implement more strict laws than the existing ones for the safety of women. There is an urgent need to impart and inculcate moral values to the police. We must streamline the police and prosecuting agencies. Our political leaders, irrespective of their party affiliations should show political will and conviction to deal severely with those guilty of crimes against women.
Yours sincerely,
B Ramesh Dhar
