Things took a violent turn when a Railway official was thrown on the ground and assaulted allegedly by the protesters. “One of our officials has been assaulted by the mob,” Chief Public Relations officer of the Eastern Railway R.N. Mahapatra told The Hindu .

Three other persons were reportedly injured as the protesters resorted to stone throwing.

However, the hawkers accused the Railways authorities of starting the eviction drive without any prior notification. There are nearly 1,000 hawkers in the station premises.

Mr. Mahapatra, however, denied the allegations and said that no notification was required since the hawkers did not have any “permission” to set shops in the station.
