Answer: Dear Friend,

I hope you are doing well.

I was really looking forward to attending your party, but I had promised to take care of my neighbor's daughter (or dog) on the same day as your birthday.

I am truly sorry I couldn't come. By the end of the day I was exhausted and it was too late to call. The next day i was planning on coming to  your house but nobody was home.

I can give you the gift next time we meet, hopefully soon.

Again I am sorry I couldn't come to the party, I hope you understand.
