My dear Sultan,

At the risk of appearing intrusive, I venture to write to you to inquire whether the rumour which reached me this morning is true. Is it a fact that you have suffered a severs pecuniary loss in the business? We hope that the rumour may turn out to be false or at least exaggerated. But should it unfortunately be true, you must let me claim the privilege of an old friend of your family and offer you such financial assistance as lies in my power.

I know all you will say. Consider it already said, and let us be practical. Permit m& to place at your disposal such a sum as you may need. Do not deny me this favour.

With best wishes.

Your sincere friend
