Beware, underaged drivers will be booked for traffic offences along with their parents.
In a special drive against minors driving motor vehicles in public places on Friday, the Mysuru City Traffic Police booked 63 cases involving the underaged driver and their parents.
Out of the 63 cases booked, a penalty of Rs. 24,400 pertaining to 21 cases was collected on the spot and the remaining 42 cases were referred to the court with a chargesheet.
“Even with regard to 21 cases in which the spot fine was collected, the vehicle was released only after the parents or the owner of the vehicle came to the spot. We will not hand over the vehicle back to the underaged owner after collecting the fine”, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime and Traffic) N.D. Birje told The Hindu .
The police are booking not only the minor child found driving the vehicle, but also her or his parents, who own the vehicle. “For, the owner of a motor vehicle permitting an underaged person to drive a vehicle in a public place is also liable for penalty”, he said.
Meanwhile, Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Madaiah said the penalty amount collected during the drive on Friday also included cases of minors driving without helmet. The penalty amount collected from the offenders is in accordance with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules 1989.
It may be mentioned here that the police had received complaints on its social media initiatives – Facebook and Twitter - about underaged persons driving motor vehicles. The police had assured the complainant that a drive will be carried out against driving by underaged persons soon after the conclusion of vacations when the educational institutions reopen.
According to CMV Act, no person under the age of eighteen years shall drive a motor vehicle in any public place. However, a motor vehicle with an engine capacity not exceeding 50 cc may be driven in a public place by a person after attaining the age of 16, provided they have their parent’s consent.
