Include a direct invitation, flexible times, the reason why you like this person, and something about your school.
“The students at our school would appreciate the opportunity to learn about you and your career in xxxx. We admire your accomplishments and the way you have improved the lives of our citizens. Our school assembly meets on the third Wednesday of each month, but I am sure that we could change the time to any time that is convenient for you. About 500 students will attend. We are hoping you can speak for 20 minutes and answer questions for 10 minutes. Your speech would mean a lot to us, and may even change the direction of some of our lives.”
As always, research your subject before writing the letter. How long does he usually speak? Does he like to answer questions?

Bring a copy of the letter. He many never have seen it — a secretary may have thrown it out.
Recently, a friend of mine who gives away tens of thousands of dollars a year remarked, “I didn’t give any money to that. I was going to, but they never called me.” People like to be asked. It’s good to send a letter, but, whatever you are seeking now or in the future, follow it up with a personal appeal.
