(Ref: about falling of trees)

On november24,2017 the first letter to the editor bemoaned the cutting of trees when homes are built. The letter writer was right with his criticisms of defoliated property, except he picked the wrong target for the blame.

Homeowners are rarely as concerned with their trees as they are with the livability of the house. It is the builder who likes to clear cut because it makes his massive cookie-cutter construction work easier.

Unfortunately some of the massive subdivisions are actually replacing acres and acres of farm land, maybe planted in corn or some such. In these cases there are few trees to plow under but the design concept is still so un-Charleston that the builder would be embarrassed if only he lived here in the first place.

But even more villainous than the tree removal is the design of the actual subdivision itself. Charleston was not originally designed with a cookie-cutter mentality and it should not be today.

Councils and approval boards should fight these plans tooth and nail, but not on a size mentality. They should insist on multiple levels of diversity, cost, style, lot size, curb appearance etc. There should a special emphasis on preserving, or providing a strong element of nature
