Cleaning India
This refers to the report, Swachha Bharat Abhiyan: Narendra Modi plans social media challenges to clean India (FE, October 2). Social media alone is not enough, what is needed is a drastic change in people's mindset, which is a herculean task. We notice this in our everyday lifegarbage is littered on roads, and even municipal authorities are not an exception. Asking a dog-owner to clean the faeces of the dog on the road, and she/he will just refuse to do so. The excreta is left behind. Ask those who celebrate festivals on the roadsdo they bother to clean the roads after celebrations Just building toilets is not enough, one also needs running water, and the will to keep the toilets clean. People do not bother to use flush, after using the toilets. People smoke in public places; does the smoker bother to clean cigarette ash and stubs from the road Washbasins in restaurants are choked, due to foodstuff choking the drain outlets These are various everyday instances. Even a name and shame policy will not work to change people's mindset, and even those using the social media, do they bother to clean their computers Some people are in the habit of using computers while eating, and keyboard becomes a breeding ground for bacteria.

Thaw in Indo-US relations
Apropos of the editorial After the charm offensive (FE, October 2), prime minister Narendra Modis visit to US has melted some of the ice which had set in the Indo-US relations during last few years. Nobody would have expected that his meeting with US President Barack Obama would sort out and settle some major differences between New Delhi and Washington. The meeting helped develop better mutual understanding on various matters of interest and both the leaders took decisions on matters related to investment, civil nuclear energy cooperation, climate change, Indo-US defence pact, etc. It is encouraging that both the leaders agreed on taking joint anti-terror measures and the US, which has all along been in denial mode over Indias concern on terrorism emanating from Pakistan, ultimately agreed for joint action against Pakistan-based terror groups such as Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammad and the 1993 Bombay-blasts mastermind Dawood Ibrahim. Besides meeting Obama, Modi has developed a good rapport with the business community of the US and the CEOs of big multinationals, inviting them to participate in the make in India programme, promising them a business-friendly environment. Modis diplomatic skills and sincerity of the purpose are winning friends for India.
