Dear Sir,

I take this opportunity to wish you and your readers a very happy and prosperous new year.

In the new year, wouldn't it be nice if we took a vow to educate our older people as illiteracy is a societal crime in this day and age? We must decide to put in untiring efforts in persuading our older, illiterate brethren to replace their thumb impressions with proper signatures.

Community groups, NGOs, politicians and the educated young and old of this country must join hands to fight the menace of illiteracy afflicting the adults of this country. It would help the cause if publications like yours kindly propagate this matter.

When we are able to educate our elders, they can find out about Government schemes, come to know of their rights as enshrined in our constitution and make enquiries of all that we educated people do on a daily basis. They would be able to operate their bank accounts without seeking assistance from others and write letters on their own. They would want to know the text of a document before signing on the dotted line and fill forms on their own with ease.

We must, however, be serious about our Adult Literacy Programme and ensure it runs the full course and on a regular basis. It should not be allowed to fizzle out mid-stream as had happened repeatedly in the past.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully
Rajat Sharma
