Sir
Subject: Poor enrolment of girls in Primary and Upper Primary stage
I wish to highlight some facts regarding the status of girls’ education in spite of policies like UEE and Sarva Siksha Abhiyan. One of the very important attributes to achieve UEE is to ensure gender parity. To measure this, girls’ education as a proportion of the total enrolment has been calculated since 1999-2000. But the facts have been discouraging. 46.7% of the students enrolled in primary classes in 2004-05 were I girls as compared to 43.6% in 1999-2000. Thus the increase in the enrolment of girls in schools is not of the required level. The same scenario has been noted in the upper primary stage.
There is a little awareness of the programme offered for the education of girls. RTE act-2006 provides free and compulsory education to all children in the age group of 6-14 years. Yet: the results are not encouraging. I feel the general masses must be made aware of the girls’ education-oriented programmes. Seminars, lectures and door-to-door awareness programmes can also be arranged. If we all join hands with the govt., we can achieve 100% literacy.
I am sure you will publish a special supplement on this issue to create awareness among the elite strata of society as well as common masses.
Thanking you in anticipation
Yours faithfully
