Sub: Dealing with the alarming issue of global warming

Sir:

Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper, I want to express my deep concern and the need to immediately the needful  at the micro and macro levels before the problem becomes unmanageable. Global warming has already started affecting the entire world. Climatic changes are noticeable everywhere. Ice is melting worldwide, especially at the Earth’s poles. This includes mountain glaciers, ice sheets covering West Antarctica and Greenland, and Arctic sea ice.

In northern Greenland traditional Inuit culture is already under threat. The sea ice that Inuit use to hunt seals, walruses, and other animals, is not staying as long as it used to. Global warming's impact on sea ice and ocean currents are also altering the distribution of animals. Melting of the huge ice sheet on Greenland will raise the sea-water level by a few feet, leading to submerging of habitable coastal areas and compelling the inhabitants to move farther inside the terrain. This would further have ecological ramifications.

The people of the world must unite and stop global warming from further rising. Emissions of green house gases must immediately be controlled along with the large scale afforestation in all the countries, especially the developing countries.

If the environment is not given the top priority throughout the world, we will lose it forever. Kindly publish my ideas in your esteemed daily for spreading public awareness in our region so that people should start caring for their environment.

Yours truly,

XYZ

Subject: Global Warming Consequences and Solutions

Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily newspaper, I wish to highlight the danger and solutions to climate change and global warming.

Global warming is the phenomenon of the increase in the temperature of the atmosphere due to the presence of excessive green house gases. Global warming will results in melting of the polar ice caps and raise in the ocean level which will submerge islands and coastal lands. Global warming is a reality but there are remedies too.

Global warming would cause unpredictable rainfall. A sudden flash flood will be followed by a period of drought. This will cause scarcity of drinking water and irrigation for cultivation leading to worldwide food scarcity.

Planting more trees will reduce the amount of the harmful carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and reduce global warming. We need to use alternative energy instead of burning of fossil fuels like coal and petroleum products. Burning of fossil fuels increase global warming and also deplete the ozone layer which protects us from the harmful effects of UV rays of the Sun.

Proper treatment of industrial waste before they are dumped and using renewable energy, electric, hydro and solar energy will help us to reduce the danger of global warming. Urgent steps must be taken to reduce exhaust emissions from motor vehicles, power plants, factories and industries. Global warming needs urgent global actions to save and preserve life on Earth.

Yours sincerely,

R. MEENAKSHI
