Dear Friend,
I hope this letter finds both of you in soaring spirits and vibrant health. I am writing to you to share with you my deep concern over the environmental problems that are going beyond man’s control. You must have read about the alarming rise in the pollution levels post Diwali celebrations. It has been an emergency like situation in Delhi. The schools and colleges have been closed for a few days because of the pollution and smog in the city.
Diwali crackers are just partly responsible. They have just aggravated the already existing critical situation. Our country has been facing many challenges; air pollution is the most critical out of them. The amount of poisonous and health endangering particles in the air in the cities, towns, etc has gone to such critical level that if no measures are taken to control it, there is every possibility of a catastrophe. The proportion of toxic gases and pollution particles in the air we breathe has skyrocketed. It is severely affecting our health.
Most of people pollution is caused by industry, cars, trucks, and airplanes. The exhaust gases from these vehicles consist mainly of unburned HCs, CO, and NOx and it accounts for approximately 90- 92% of all vehicle emissions. Presence of these gases in the air leads to many health complications such as, respiratory and heart conditions along with Cancer, among other threats to the body. Children in areas exposed to air pollutants are said to commonly suffer from pneumonia and asthma.
Not only air pollution, all sorts of land, water, noise pollutions have gone beyond critical levels. I feel so scared and uncertain concerning our future, and the future of coming generations. The people and the government need to declare environmental emergency, and start the restoration and conservation programs at war footing, otherwise calamity is not far. I have decided to plant 100 saplings and adopt them until they become fully fledged trees. I will also adopt environmental friendly life style. I am going to monitor and reduce my carbon footprint. I appeal to you to do the same. I am sure you will also contribute to conserving our precious environment. Give regards to uncle and aunt.
