the HRD Minister:
Dear Sir,
We, the children of India, are writing to you today with a request to reopen our schools. We believe that while everyone has been trying their best to overcome these challenging times, it is time that you directly heard from us, the students - the main stakeholders of the education system.
We want to start off by saying thank you, all the educators and officials who worked hard to adapt to the online world. To our parents who continued to support our education by getting us smartphones, even when they were struggling to make ends meet. And to all the NGOs and Government leaders who came up with innovative practices to keep us engaged online. And to Students, who have gone above and beyond to help themselves and those around them.
“Our state came up with two initiatives during the pandemic: E-pathshala and the Prerna Saathi program. Through this, all the older students are put in touch with a group of younger students whom we teach every day. We think this is a great program as it not only helps younger students learn, but it also helps us revise our own concepts.”
- Urvashi and Anushka, Grade 8, Uttar Pradesh
However, last year has also been extremely challenging for all students across the country. “In the first few months of lockdown, there was only one smartphone in the house which my father needed for his work. Later on, my parents decided to invest money to get me a smartphone so that I don’t miss out on my studies. But I know that I’m one of the lucky ones. So many of my friends have not been able to attend an online class because they don’t have a phone. These are students who are really interested in studying and want to learn but can’t. They’re going to find it really difficult to catch up when school reopens.” - Krishna, Grade 5, Delhi. Listen to Krishna talk more about the challenges of online school.
When schools were open, the atmosphere of the classroom encouraged us to study and learn. Our teachers were warm, welcoming and enthusiastic, which made us look forward to learning. But with schools being closed, we don’t get to see anyone, and our motivation levels have declined.
“Schools are so much more than just learning, they’re about social interaction as well. And now thanks to having schools shut down, this interaction is not really possible. There are millions of children around India who haven't even attended a day of school, online or physical, during this pandemic. It's been 16 months and counting of this lockdown and no school for children, which is more than enough time for children to forget what they’ve learnt.
