Hon. Gerry
Ritz Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food House of Commons

RE: Please stop Monsanto’s GE alfalfa
Dear Minister Ritz,
I am writing to ask you to stop the introduction of genetically engineered (GE) alfalfa. As you can see, alfalfa seeds are tiny. We will not be able to stop the GE contamination of conventional and organic alfalfa in Canada if GE alfalfa is commercialized.
I don’t want to eat GE alfalfa sprouts and I want to protect our food system from GE contamination. Monsanto’s herbicide tolerant (Roundup Ready) alfalfa is already approved for growing and human consumption in Canada but its not yet legal to sell GE alfalfa seed (this would require variety registration). I ask you to make sure GE alfalfa is not sold in Canada.
Alfalfa is a critically important crop in Canada for many different types of farmers. Alfalfa a perennial crop with unique benefits. It is a soil builder that is important for many grain farmers and is also a highly valuable livestock feed, for beef and dairy farmers.
We are currently witnessing the crisis of GE contamination in Canadian flax that shut down our flax export markets in late 2009. This crisis is causing economic hardship to our flax farmers.
We cannot let GE contamination also hurt Canadian farmers who grow alfalfa. Please make sure that GE alfalfa does not enter Canada’s market or contaminate our crops.
Thank you for your consideration of this urgent matter.
I look forward to your response. Sincerely, Signature:

Dear Sir/Madam,

 Subject: Use of Chemical Fertilizers

We are aware that technical development introduced in agriculture has helped a lot in improving the productivity and also help farmers. But it is observed that things has been overdone and we are facing the repercussions today.

Chemical fertilizers have acted as a boon initially but their excessive use has led to a disastrous result on agricultural produce. Such usage has led to soil erosion, immunity of pests leading to more usage which has led to a vicious cycle, poor quality produce, water contamination due to excess nitrogen usage etc. It is a health hazard too when not used in proper balanced quantities.

The need of the hour is to resort to natural products like organic fertilizers. They might work slower than the chemical fertilizers but they have a positive permanent impact on the soil texture in the long run, improve the water retaining capacity of the soil, thus regaining the fertility of the soil and also preventing soil erosion.

The farmers also need to be given enough training to understand the functions well to be encouraged to use organic fertilizers and also trained for proper usage of the same.

I hope my efforts to reach out to you will reap rewards to benefit everyone.

Yours sincerely
