NEW DELHI: As the COVID-19 outbreak has taken a serious turn with new cases are being reported, the residential welfare associations (RWAs) have taken the management of the society complexes in their own hands. Many high-rise societies in Delhi NCR, Bengaluru, Mumbai and others, where residents associations have not been formed, people have formed small teams to ensure smooth supply of grocery, medical and other necessities.

Pradeep Kumar Kamboj, president, AOA, 5th Avenue, Gaur City, says, “We are sanitizing the common areas, lifts every day. Society gates are closed now and entry of maids and other domestic staff is restricted since 20th March. We have made the arrangements for thermal scanning at the main gate and after checking people are allowed to go inside the society. Who so ever is coming to the society is washing their hands at the entry gate and using sanitizer at main gate and then only they are allowed to go.”

Many societies have also prepared a database of people coming from abroad and that same is being used to track their health status. Fellow residents have extended helping hands for those in needs like differently-abled and senior citizens or those who are sick.

Kamboj adds, “We are making a database of each resident who is coming from abroad or expected to come from abroad and reporting to medical authorities. Residents are coming forward to help other residents who are either sick or senior citizens.”

In some societies where AOA is not formed, residents have made teams to monitor entry and exit. They're also tracking people with the COVID-19 symptoms to ensure others do not come in contact with them.

“In Trident Embassy residents formed a self volunteered team and held a meeting with the maintenance. Under the continuous pressure and guidelines of the team, maintenance managed to get masks for security guard and thermal screening device. The team is continuously monitoring society. Entry of maids and workers is completely banned and those who are going out and coming in are allowed only if they are wearing masks, getting their hands sanitized and passing thermal screening. Residents are staying in their homes and only go out for essential things,” says Ajay Kumar, a resident.

Services such as swimming pool, gym and clubhouses have been shut down so that people to people contact can be reduced. Apart from this, residents are themselves cleaning the lift and lobby areas. The entry of vendors and delivery boys are banned in our society. Milkmen and grocery vendors are allowed only outside the society gate.

Ashok Malik, a resident of Gurugram living in New Town Heights in Sector 90, explains, “We have stopped all activities in the gym, clubhouse from March 16 onwards. Vendors and maids are not being allowed. Grocery and other essentials are allowed only at the society gate. Young residents are helping senior citizens and those in need of essential services. The lifts, doors and lobby area are being sanitized 3-4 times in a day.

Every day almost hundreds of people enter these high-rise societies for supplying essentials to residents. However, the COVID19 outbreak has led to a total ban of outsiders in the apartment complexes. This has not only affected the residents but those working in them as well.

A resident of Bengaluru’s high-rise society, Meenakshi says, “We have stopped the swimming pool and no birthday parties or any celebration is allowed now. We have provided senitizers at the gate. No delivery boys allowed inside the building. This has been done for the next 15 days.”
