Dear Editor,
School Bullying
I would like to draw readers’ attention to the problem of school bullying. I have learnt that, in some
schools, junior students are being beaten up and bullied by senior students.
In Hong Kong, there is an increasing trend of bullying in school. This problem may lead to serious
consequences that the case may lead to distortion of personality of victims and even affect the mental
health of them. The one who is being bullied may get phobia and he may skip lessons. Besides, being
bullied destroys the self-confidence, self-esteem and the ability of adapting to the environment of students.
They may become anxious all the time. The bullies may think that it is an acceptable act. This problem
can be attributed to the following factors.
Firstly, the misconceptions implanted to the senior students contribute to the problem. Teenagers are
affected by the environment and peers easily. The news about bullying and those violent movies influence
the students. They believe that the society is fittest to survive. And they may think that bullying others can
indicate their strength and thus promote themselves to a noticeable status among peers of inside the
school.
Apart form the bullies, those being bullied should also take the responsibility. Since those junior
students are beaten up or bullied of even intimidated, they are afraid to report their case to teachers and
parents. They may use different excuses to explain the bruises on bodies. They even skip lessons. Seldom
do they point the finger at those senior students. They do not want to confront with the problem.
To deal with the problem, some actions should be taken. The problem can only be solved by the joint
efforts of students, schools, parents and society.
Education is always the best solution to problems. Cultivating the students’ correct attitudes can
improve the situation. Teachers and parents should teach them the right concepts as well as how to face
such a situation. Besides, the schools need to impose heavy punishments to repeated offenders. This can
give a warning to other students as well. For society, educational movies, books should be published to
implant concepts to students day by day. Teachers can even use these to be the teaching materials.
I hope that this letter will arouse the public awareness to this matter and solve the problem without
further delay.
Yours faithfully,
Chris
