Dear Editor,

I am Amit Kanwal  residing in Hanuman Gali, Phagwara for the last 15 years. I am writing to you to express my concern over the widespread communal hatred that we are witnessing almost every day in our country. Being a democratic and secular nation and with such diversity that cannot be found anywhere across the globe, its disheartening to see people fighting in the name of religion

With more than 1.3 billion inhabitants and being the second most populist nation in the world we are a multi-ethnic democracy and religiously diverse  — the world's biggest. The constitution grants freedom of religion and the right to observe, profess and propagate religion. However, given the diversity of religions in , religious freedom in India has rapidly deteriorated in recent years

Religious groups in India in recent years have threatened, harassed and even assassinated religious minority leaders or others who leave or change their religions. Such actions pose a clear challenge to the Indian constitution's secular statements and the fundamental freedom of millions of Indians to live freely, or in accordance with their beliefs without fear of violence, or practice their religion freely.

Its time the nation wakes up to taking more stringent measures in curtailing communal violence. What is being done is not enough and is neither helping. There must be ways to spread awareness about the repercussions of communal disharmony such that people really understand and do their best in spreading peace and remaining united
