Subject: The growing crime against women in Assam.
Respected Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed daily newspaper, I would like to express my deep sadness over the increasing crime against women.
Harassments against women and crimes against women, these are things we never heard some decades ago. This is an indication of the complete breakdown of the moral fabrics of our communities.
Women encounter various forms of crimes against them. Cat calling or whistling is one of them. The next is intentionally bumping into them. It's a shame that high school and college students, and even elderly mothers are not spared.
Sexual harassments happen more often in the work places. The majority don't file complaints with the police. They preferred to remain silent out of fear of being misunderstood and likely social scandal. They are also not sure whether the police will really help them or dismissed it as if it is nothing serious.
There are some instances relating to tourists visiting India. Such cases become global news headlines and damage the reputation of the country and the tourism industry too suffer.
It is said that the greatness and the civilization of a country is known by the way it treats the womenfolk. When we are truly upset with the state of affairs, we are compelled to say that we are still barbarians.
I understand that a few indecent and uncultured me can ruin the reputation of the entire country. We just cannot let this continue. The police alone can never solve the problem. The Assam communities and the law enforcement agencies must unite to root out the evil of crime against women. We all want to be proud of our country and proud to be an Indian.
