Subject: Need to stop stubble burning
Dear Sir
I wish to draw attention to the problem caused by stubble burning. With a large number of farmers setting fire to the stubble of crops, the environment and health of citizens, both are being adversely affected. The local authorities need to act immediately.
To begin with, setting fire to stubble is ruining the air quality. The smoke and carbon released from the activity is choking the entire north region, particularly the country's capital. It is causing breathing difficulties and forcing people to seek medical help. Also, the smoke and smog have greatly reduced visibility, leading to a sharp increase in the number of vehicular accidents and deaths. Citizens are struggling to live comfortably.
There is a lack of awareness amongst farmers. They continue to rely on stubble burning as a method to clear their fields and prepare it for the next round of crops. The outreach cells set up by the respective state governments need to explain the facts to them and educate them about the tremendous increase in pollution it causes. Besides imposing heavy penalties, the government could also introduce machines to clear the farmlands.
At this point in time, when India is looking forward to being a key world player, primitive problems like stubble burning do not fit in with modern India’s outlook. With cooperation from all quarters, the problem can be dealt with effectively, giving utmost priority to farmers' issues, citizens’ health and the environment.
Yours sincerely,
Megha Saikia
