Subject: The Evil of Drinking

Sir:

I write this letter to express my deep concern over the problem of the alarming rising of alcohol consumption in India and the dire consequences in its wake. I was shocked to read the statistics pertaining to drinking alcohol in our country. According to 2013 National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, 15 people die every day – or one every 96 minutes – from the effects of drinking alcohol. According to another report by WHO On the ‘Years of Life Lost’ scale, which is based on alcohol-attributable years of life lost, India has been rated 4 on a scale of 1 to 5. This implies that the alcohol consuming population of our country loses most years of their life because of drinking and its consequences.

If alcohol is causing so much damage to our country’s Human Resource, what is our Government doing to curb it? Can any country whose human resource is afflicted by health problems progress optimally? Not at all! The research has confirmed alcohol consumption causes tuberculosis, epilepsy, hemorrhagic stroke and hypertensive heart diseases.

Keeping in view the adverse effects of alcohol consumption, I appeal to the Government at State as well as the Central level to make policies to curb and control and discourage alcohol consumption in our country. I hope my views will find due space in the columns of your esteemed daily.

Thanking you.

Yours truly,

Gibran Josh

Express News Daily.

It is sad that mire and more young people are coming slaves to alcohol. It is a trap and the escape is almost impossible.

Drinking has ruined more families than anything else. A drunkard spends all his earnings in liquor. He forgets his responsibilities to provide for his family.

Drinking affects the physical and mental health of a person. Every day hundreds of people in India die from damaged livers and kidneys. Many more are left bankrupt from medical treatment of alcohol related diseases.

Addiction to alcohol leads to completed degeneration of man, physically and spiritually. No lost the trust and the respect of their community. They are laughed at by everyone. Nobody cares about them.

We must not forget that alcoholism is always linked to various criminal and antisocial activities.

The government launched the poster campaigns with slogans like “Drinking is injurious to health". But this appears to be nothing but a publicity stunt. It is still granting licences for liquor shops.

Aspirations and ambitions are crushed by alcohol. Careers are ruined. The youths become a liability instead of assets to the nation.

Education and awareness on the evils of drinking must be taken up on a war footing.

The government, voluntary organisations and the community must come together and approach the evils of alcoholism in a pragmatic way. They should work hand in hand to root out this destructive menace to the family, the community and the nation.

Yours sincerely,

Arianna
