Subject: Price rise of essential commodities
Sir,
ADVERTISEMENTS:
Only two months ago, the union government assured us that it had taken all necessary measures to bring the price situation under control, and that very soon the prices of essential commodities would return to normal. But the prices have kept rising, and the government has changed its stance. It now says that it is not only India where the prices are rising, but that it is a global phenomenon.
The implication seems to be that, till a few weeks ago, the government was under the impression that the price rise was only a national matter, and therefore within its power to resolve; but now that it has woken up to the global character of the inflation, there is little that can be done!
I wonder if the state government feels the same way about the situation because, like the union government, it seems to be doing nothing concrete to resolve the issue.
The whole world is aware that in India, there is widespread hoarding of essential commodities, which are therefore being sold at artificially inflated prices. Why doesn’t the government, for starters, crack down on such hoarders? It is amazing to see how it refuses to raise a finger to eliminate corruption and establish transparency in public life.
While it may be true in the ordinary, everyday conduct of affairs that that government is the best which governs the least, I think it is also important for it to take an uncompromising stand when it comes to issues such as profiteering.
Yours faithfully.
