Explanation:

Homework is a challenging task for most students. There must be few who would want to sacrifice sleep to complete assignments. But nowadays students have to burn midnight hours to complete their homework.

Homework is a set of tasks assigned to students by their teachers to be completed outside the class. Homework may include a variety of tasks like reading, writing, solving the maths problems.

However, given the increasing levels of stress associated with school, the effect of homework has been debated.

Generally speaking ,homework ? might improve academic skills among older students ? does not necessarily improve academic performance. It also elicits stress for students and their parents.

When extracurricular activities such as sports, exercising, competitions, etc. are added to the picture, students may even have to wake up early the next morning to finish their homework. The students are then sleep deprived because they have to sacrifice rest to complete their homework. Some parents and teachers argue that it would be beneficial to prescribe a limit for such after school activities.

There are also those who defend the ever increasing amount of homework, claiming that it helps to prepare students for a world that is becoming increasingly competitive. Dr. Kralovec, author of The End of Homework, argues that doing home work during high school has little or no effect on the skills of students once they join college.

Excessive amount of homework is also stressful and can be harmful to kids, both physically and mentally. A lot if homework usually means a lot of books to carry. Carrying heavy weights daily at a tender age can do a lot of damage because the bones of these young students are still developing. The U.S Product Safety commission has reported that in the year 1999, more than 800 kids were treated in emergency wards for backpack related injuries. This can lead to serious problems later in life including chronic shoulder, neck and back pain.

Homework also takes away the time that a children could be spending with his or her family. Homework takes away from the small amount of time kids get to spend with their parents and siblings. Time is particularly precious in families wherein both parents working. The time spent by parents with their children is very limited. This time could be better spent by going for dinner together, playing with parents, and engaging in other activities. However, children seldom get these opportunities because of the burden of timely submissions.Time is taken away from these crucial aspects of a student?s daily life; A limit on their physical and social activities will take a large toll on their lives, and could hinder their health and relationships, in the long run.

Despite the huge drawbacks of excessive homework, this not to say that homework should be abolished. Rather, there should be a reasonable limit to it. Homework should also be creative and interesting so that the child enjoys it. Most importantly, homework should be aimed at encouraging a healthy, balanced lifestyle.
