Dear Sir,
I wish to take this opportunity to write to you and through you draw the attention of your readers about the abysmal state of our national sport, Hockey.
India continually won the Olympic Gold Medal in this sport from the Amsterdam Games in 1928 till the Melbourne Games in 1956, producing such stalwarts as Dhyan Chand, Roop Singh, Leslie Claudius, Zafar Iqbal, to name only a few, on the way. After losing the Gold to arch-rival Pakistan at Rome in 1960, India bounced back to win the Gold Medal in the Tokyo Games in 1964. Since then, it has been a downward journey for our national team. Except for the Gold at Moscow in 1980, when most leading countries boycotted the Games, there has been nothing to show.
What is the Hockey Association doing to improve the sport? Why do retired bureaucrats and serving or retired politicians serve as members of this Sports Body? I think it is high time the present committee is shown the door and retired players get together to form a committee, with a view to bringing back the glory this sport rightly deserves.
Thanking you,
Yours faithfully
