If Major League Baseball and the players union really want to stop the use of performance-enhancing drugs, it should institute a “one use is a lifetime ban” policy. Failing that, suspensions should be imposed based on time, not games. First offense, a one-year suspension from the time the penalty is imposed. Second offense, a two-year suspension.
To allow someone like Ryan Braun, who not only lied about his drug use, but also tarnished the reputation of a sample collector and made a mockery of the arbitration process, to escape with only a suspension for the rest of a dismal season will not deter others.
