In a letter written to MC commissioner AK Sinha, Virinder Bhakoo, president of Kitchlu Nagar Residents Association, has said the menace caused by stray dogs in their locality had assumed alarming proportions as there are reports of dog bites occurring everyday, adding that during the last fortnight, about 20 such cases have come to light.
He said though in the past, MC had planned to undertake sterilization of stray dogs to check their increasing numbers, nothing concrete has come out of it.
He rued that it appears MC fears legal proceedings on part of animal-lovers, due to which, human beings were badly suffering on account of such incidents, which sometimes prove fatal. He also said that if human lives are lost to dog-bites, existence of human society would be in danger.
He said they had lodged a number of complaints with MC but all had proved futile. Residents have been requesting MC authorities to come to their rescue, but none of the previous incumbents have cared to mitigate their problems, he added.
Due to MCs failure in tackling the problem, residents have lodged a complaint with Punjab State Human Rights Commission (PSHRC), after which, a notice has been issued to MC. The issue was also raised by councillors at a recent corporation meeting
Answer:
I am writing to your esteemed self to bring to your notice the nuisance caused by stray dogs in our colony. The number of stray dogs in our colony has risen alarmingly. The rise in their number has led to various other problems such as competition for food and shelter.
The gangs of dogs often get involved in fierce wars. These fierce dogs pose serious threats to the safety of residents, especially children playing in the streets and parks. A few children have already been bitten by these dogs. I on behalf of the residents appeal to you to look into. Kindly relieve us of these dogs by getting them rehabilitated to homes for stray animals. We shall be grateful.
Yours faithfully,
