Hi,

I just returned from a memorable & wonderful vacation in Jammu & Kashmir.

There's absolutely no problem,no fear & tourists can really have a fun filled vacation.

All my apprehensions & fear of the unrest & other problems totally disappeared during my holiday.

My special thanks to TA & Mr.Ashish Da,Anil Agarawal,Vijay Mishra,Roshini & all other forum posts which really helped a lot.

It was a family vacation of 2 adults & 2 children.

On reaching Jammu,we started our tour in our pre booked Innova(Rs.2500.00 per day) on disposal basis for entire tour.Visited Raghunathji Temple in Jammu & started for Srinagar.Enroute visited Verinag, thanks to Mr.Anil Agarwal.(Birth place of river Jhelum.)Beautiful & serene place with a Lord Shiva idol & beautiful park.Stayed in Srinagar House boat(Butterfly) on Nigeen Lake.Next day was local Srinagar sight seeing.Tulip Garden was really great!!

Third day, visited Sonmarg & indulged in snow activities.Excellent snow!!Fourth day was Gulmarg.Fortunate enough to visit both phases of Gondola rides despite overcast & cloudy weather with a drizzle.Phase 1 was good for skiing, snow scooter, etc;Phase 2 was excellent.Total snow covered peaks.

Pl. dont miss the Kahwa(Kashmiri Tea) in the foothills of Gulmarg at Tangmarg,in Hotel Mahajan.Being specially prepared by an old gentleman, who shares the secret of the Kahwa too.

Next day, visited Avantipur ruins,Cricket bat factory & saffron fields(Almost dry now) & reached Pahalgam. It was really cold & drizzling.Electric blanket was really essential.

Went by pony to Baisaran(Switzerland of India).Beautiful place. Not to be missed!!Local sight seeing of Aru,Betaab Valley & Chandanwadi was covered in a local vehicle due to Pahalgam's union.

Next day, visited Mattan,Lord Shiva temple with fish filled springs enroute to Patnitop, bought the local special sweets in Kud & reached Katra.Last day,had a wonderful & peaceful darshan of Mata Vaishnodevi through helicopter (To & Fro) & concluded our tour at Jammu.

The hotel tariffs at all the places was @ Rs.3000.00 on MAP basis for four bedded deluxe rooms & Rs.2500.00 in Pahalgam. Most of the hotels had vacant rooms & can be bargained for great discounts.

Kashmiris are really sweet talking people & courteous to tourists, but like in any other tourist place, bargaining is a must.

It was a pleasant change to notice that none of the tourist places in Kashmir charged a fee for video/camera,unlike in other cities. The gondola in Gulmarg is very poorly managed & nobody bothers to regulate the queue & touts have a free hand in connivance with the operators in pushing through their people, same is the case in Katra with Pawan Hans Helicopter.Global Vectra helicopter is excellently managed without any such issues.

In Pahalgam, beware of the pony guys taking the tourists through short cuts, thru' steep & slippery terrains, which is extremely dangerous & risky.I've seen a couple of serious accidents myself. Please insist on taking the regular plain roads, otherwise it is not for the frail hearted & very risky!!

Dry fruits/saffron are best to be bought in Srinagar market rather than in the roadside shops, which are costly & even not genuine.

Overall it was a great vacation!!
