My dear dad,

I was overjoyed to receive your long awaited letter yesterday. Reading it made me forget my homesickness for a while and bought forth pleasant memories. My studies are going on at an impressive pace. Next year, as you rightly pointed out in your letter, we shall have to choose from the elective subjects of Mathematics , Biology or Arts.

I sincerely value your advice, for taking up Biology for pursuing a career in Medicine. There is indeed no doubt that a doctor's profession is very noble, but I somehow do not have any inclination or aptitude for Biology. I find it boring especially the dissection part is quite nauseating. It is on account of this, I did not score good marks in this subject in the school examination.

On the other hand in English language and literature I scored good marks. I got the highest marks in English language because of which I have been nominated as the editor of our school magazine which is to come out shortly. I have contributed a number of articles in this magazine. Beside this a number of my articles have been published in the local edition of the 'Times of India'. This has encouraged me to pursue a career in journalism, which I find very interesting and challenging.

Journalism as a profession, is also very noble and respectable. They are the fourth estate, that serve as a watchdog in a democracy, safeguarding our freedom. Being a journalist, gives one an opportunity to serve the nation, by highlighting important social and national issues, besides protecting the common men: from exploitation and injustice.

There is ample scope for growth in this profession, with tremendous potential in the print and electronic media. It also offers good opportunity to show one's creativity and hence there is greater job satisfaction. Moreover journalists have easy access to the high and mighty bureaucrats and politicians. They are respected for their views and make a valuable contribution to the society. Their significance can be gauged from the fact that, many great men including Mahatma Gandhi, Dr.Radha Krishnan, began their career as a journalist.

I would therefore seek your blessings, in pursuing this career, for which I have a natural liking. Please give my regards to mom.

Your affectionate daughter/son

My dear Father,

You’ll be glad to know that I am thoroughly prepared for the ensuing S.S.C. examination. I don’t know your plans about my future education. May I share with you my thoughts about the course of study I would like to take next year?

As you are aware, the general tendency among the good students today is to opt for the study of science. Their aim, generally approved of by their parents and guardians, is to become engineers and doctors. As a result of this tendency, which has prevailed for several years, there is unemployment among science graduates, especially engineers.

I, for one, wish to choose the Arts Course. Not that I am weak in science subjects. The important point is that I am passionately interested in humanities, in literature, history, and politics. The study of humanities has a cultural value and teaches us the art of living. It also offers, good job opportunities, provided one does well, as I hope to do, in the examinations. I wish to be a journalist, and the study of subjects like literature and politics will be an asset to me in my career.

Let us talk over this matter in greater detail after I come home. Please give my love to Mum, Veena and Anil.

Yours affectionately,
