My dear brother,

I am in receipt of your kind letter and have noted its contents. I am really sorry for having written no letter to you for the past seven days. In fact life in Simla these days has become very difficult on account of the sweeping cold wind and continued rains.

The 18th of January this year was the coldest day of the season. Though it had been raining continuously since the 16lh, yet it was on the 18th, that we experienced the heaviest rainfall. The cold increased to almost unbearable extent. Every blow of wind sent shivers in our body. The heaters in our rooms were unable to warm us. Our woollies could not keep away the cold from our bodies.

The sky was heavily overcast with dark clouds and the rain had been lashing the ground with full fury. It was impossible to go out. All streets and roads wore a deserted look and small streams of rainwater were flowing down the mountainous roads.

That day our milkman did not turn up at our house and we were afraid of going out to buy fresh milk from the bazar. Consequently we had to fall back upon powdered milk. Tea or coffee taken many times during the day afforded little comfort and we continued shivering even amidst the warmest atmosphere in our rooms.

We thanked God when in the evening the clouds burst and rain stopped. Yet this was no satisfaction because the icy cold night lay ahead. Our teeth were chattering and our fingers benumbed so much so that our hands had been incapacitated. It was with great difficulty that we passed the night. I had never experienced such a cold and rainy day in my life.

Please convey my respects to dear mother and father.

Your loving brother,

Akash

Dear Friend:

I hope this letter finds you in great health and upbeat mood. I am very elated at the moment while writing to you. I have just come inside after a long bath in the rain. It has been really raining very hard here in our city. The long spell of summer this season was quite hot and scorching. We believed it would not rain this summer. But last week, the miracle happened. All of sudden the sky was overcast with thick-bellied, monstrous clouds of dark grey hue scudded across the sky. People stopped their work and came out. Soon a cool breeze began to blow, soothing the month old ache caused by the heat wave. Within no time thick drops of cold water began falling from the sky. It rained continuously for 2 hours. Everybody enjoyed themselves in the shower, including the animals and building. The very earth seemed to be rejoicing. Trees, plants and the building were washed. The oppression of the summer was ended. People and animal felt new energy flowing in their veins. Life looked more pleasant and fresher. It is my personal belief that it is not the rain merely; it is God's blessings that fall to earth after the hot spell of the scorching summer. How is the weather in Vellore? That's all from my side. When are you coming to see us? How are ur mother and father there?

Your loving friend,

X.Y.Z
