Dear Friends,

Hope this letter meets you healthy and happy. I am inspired to write today about our misuse of social media, which I am not happy about. Some will agree with me and some won’t. But it’s normal to have disagreement sometimes in life. However, I hope you take these words in good faith and not as the beginning of a war.

I created a Facebook account in July 2009. That day was the first time I had chatted with a cousin who I had never met or spoken with. She was born in the US and I in Liberia. I was so excited that I had finally gotten the opportunity to connect with a relative in the US and I felt like we had known each other forever.

After that night, every other day I wanted to be on Facebook and connect with family and friends from other countries I had not seen for a long time. Few weeks went by and I had another opportunity to be on Facebook, so I connected with another cousin in Australia, and then classmates, childhood friends from Guinea, the United States, Liberia and other parts of the world. I made new friends whenever I went to events, meetings or travelled outside of my country and in additions to exchanging cards, we exchanged Facebook profiles.

Sadly, over the last couple of years not a single day would pass by without seeing a Facebook status with a comment, photo, or video of personal disputes, bullying, vulgar language, or offensive and illicit sexual content.

Just the other day, someone posted a picture that read “whoever made school, your mom a h...” I decided to read the over twenty comments that followed, hoping to see someone rebuke that post. To my surprise, no one did. Instead, they posted laughing faces, crying faces, clapping emoticons, emojis and smileys. It became a comedy show of how they hate cutting sleep in the morning for school, how math and science are useless, etc. I was like…“Seriously? How would you be able to write or read those words if it wasn’t for school?”

This is just one particular case, but there is growing abuse of social media not only in the West, but also in Africa. In Liberia, where I come from, there is not a single day I wouldn’t see in a discussion where a Christian is insulting Muslims or vice versa. There is not a single day I wouldn’t see teen girls posting half naked pictures of themselves and asking their friends “How do I look?” or “Body on point?” There is not a single day I won’t see teen boys sharing content glorifying drugs, alcohol, sexual abuse, or bullying.

I have thought about closing my account, but then again that’s where I connect with you - family, friends, colleagues and acquaintances. Facebook is where I can maturely challenge the negative perceptions of my peers who feel that school is useless and let them know that despite the challenges in education, some of us can read this post because we went to school. Facebook is where I can join the voices of other activists in my country, Liberia, and around the world to talk about education, youth employment, gender violence, gender equality, empathy, peace, love and religious tolerance. Facebook is where I learn about the amazing work of changemakers and leaders, which inspires me and gives me hope in humanity. Facebook is where I can share with you my passion, work, and progress, and seek your support. Facebook is where I learn about scholarships, conferences, workshops, awards and internship opportunities like the UNICEF VOY blogging internship.

Dear friends, the abuse and misuse of social media can lead to mental health issues, destroy relationships, and increase addictions. However, its ‘proper use’ can lead to the development of long lasting relationships, open the doors to opportunities, foster peace, love, unity and make the world a better place.

Let’s use social media wisely.
