Letter: It is still important to

To the Editor:

As a child I was taught to respect my elders and I knew what would happen if I did not. I was also taught to respect my mother and if I didn’t I knew what to expect from my dad. The back of his hand would send me spinning and I’d be getting off the floor.

Recently we heard about a World War II veteran (88 years old) who was assaulted by two teenagers in Spokane. They killed him and stole his money. They didn’t show him any respect, did they? How sad.

In 1975 when my folks were celebrating their 50th anniversary on the West Side, Dad came into the house and said, “Everyone in the back, we’re saluting the flag on this Fourth of July.” He was talking to his three sons who all served their country with honor. We all smiled and did what he ordered. Respect your elders.
