With the state of Kerala being badly affected by massive floods, the INC President, Rahul Gandhiwrites a letter to PM Modi expressing his concern over the flood situation in Kerala. Hilly and coastal districts of Idukki, Wayanad, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, and Kozhikode have borne extensive damage due to this natural disaster. State Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has visited flood-affected areas. His helicopter had landed in Wayanad, Kerala and previously he had to cancel his proposed visit to the Idukki, as authorities declined request citing ‘incessant rain’.
In the letter to the Prime Minister, Rahul Gandhi mentions about the torrential rains, floods and wide-scale landslides that have left behind ‘a trail of destruction across the state’. Terming the current state as the ‘most severe disaster in the last five decades’ Gandhi exerts that this natural calamity has resulted in ‘massive economic and human losses.’
“I request you to release sufficient funds immediately to the state government, to enable the state to respond effectively, and work towards restoring critical infrastructure,” Gandhi said in his letter to Modi.
The floods in Kerala have caused widespread devastation in the state, killing many people. So far 29 people have been reported to have lost their lives in the heavy rains since 8 August and over 50,000 persons have been shifted to relief camps. The politician has also written in his letter that, the fishermen community is one of the worst groups affected and this disaster has dealt a “deadly blow” to them at a time when the fishing industry is yet to recover from the adverse impact of Ocki cyclone. Incessant rains have forced the state to open the shutters of 24 dams, and the resultant deluge is likely to cause massive destruction in downstream areas. As many as 60 tourists, including 20 foreigners, who were stranded at a private resort in Munnar in Kerala’s Idukki district, have been rescued.
