We are keenly aware of our responsibility to those of you who pay to read the FT. But in times like these we feel that we also have a responsibility to inform the wider community. That is why I have taken the step to make a few of our great number of stories on coronavirus free to read. I know I can count on the support of our longtime subscribers for this measure.
There is a special bond between the FT and its readers. Many of you have read us for much of your adult life. Our columnists and writers are familiar voices to you. You know you can rely on us, and we know we can rely on you. And we will do everything we can to keep it that way — today, tomorrow, and every day of this latest threat to life and global stability.
Stay safe, and best wishes,

Dear John Doe,
I hope you are doing well. It's starting to gear up for the holidays where I am. I can't go many places due to the pandemic, nor do I want to. I never see a lot of my family anyways because they do their own things or live far away from me. They still send their regards, though.
My family is already wrapping presents, and later I'll be doing the same. I made refrigerator magnets for my parents! I hope they like them. We already put up our Christmas tree and motor train. I always have to adjust the front-turning wheels or else it tips over on the bend in the tracks. Our Angel tree topper manages to shift sideways, so we have to fix her so that she doesn't fall off and break things.
My grandma is going to take presents to some of my family in our area, but then she'll be coming to our house to spend the evening with us. She gives us ornaments every year, and this year they were elves wearing face masks. Cute, right? I can't wait for Christmas to come.
I hope you have a happy holiday season.
Sincerely,
Your Friend
