Answer:

With a 21-day lockdown at the time when the new academic session normally starts, has really thrown up many challenges for the educational institutions. The first few months is also crucial because this is when the teacher-student equation is set in place, especially among those who come in contact for the first time.

Mona Singh, principal of Guru Nanak Public School in Model Town Extension, said, “Simply sending assignments is not the solution, because not all parents can help their wards in studies. Also, books have not been purchased by the students yet. Giving them assignments is not difficult, but expecting the students to attempt the same without clearing any concepts may not work out. We can post solutions online but that’s not enough.”

However, according to the principal, the school is planning to send assignments just to keep the students busy. “These will be in the form of crossword or writing a diary to maintain a record of their feelings and emotions during the lockdown period. A document that can be preserved for posterity. We are working on other such improvised assignments, which can be done without a textbook.’

Keeping in view the delay in the commencement of the classes, principal Singh said, “We have curtailed our syllabus and the first exam or any other form of formal testing will not take place before September. We intend conducting classes during June.”

Navita Puri, principal of KVM School, said, “It’s very obvious that distance and online study can never match the physical presence in the classroom. The teachers are not fully satisfied with the class interaction. Usually, they take into consideration the different levels of understanding of different students. The students who need extra help could not be detected and helped so far. The students are missing their sports periods, extra curricular activities and, above all, their school friends.”

The biggest challenge according to principal Puri is that some students and teachers haven’t really gotten to know each other, especially the kindergarten and primary class students. “Though technology has made its presence felt in the classroom for the last 15-20 years, the teachers in most Indian schools and colleges are most comfortable still using the board and chalk method. For them suddenly shifting to recording and sending their lectures and not being able to oversee if the student (especially the slow learners) have completed the assigned task is a great mental adjustment and we are happy to see the staff is still going all out to adapt to this online medium of teaching and researching new online methodology and material to provide an enriching learning experience to our students in these adverse circumstances.”

Divjot Kaur, a student of Class X, said, “We are able to manage well in our studies through online videos and assignments uploaded by our school teachers through the e-care app of our school. I am thankful to our school principal and vice-principal for making learning easily available during this period of crisis.”

Vansh Gupta, one of the toppers of Commerce stream, said. “I spend four hours attending the online classes being organ ised by my school. Lessons are very effective and useful, but I miss being in the school. Being at home 24/7 is becoming boring.”

The solution to boredom, according to Vansh’s father, Sumit Bharti could be that schools covering more lessons to keep students occupied for the whole day.

Adabjot Singh Dhillon, a senior KG student at Mount Litra Zee School, said he maintains his daily school work habits with the help of online learning techniques. His father, Satjot Dhillon, said, “These online modules not only help in covering school curriculum, but also keep the kids busy with enjoyable and educating activities.

He is also of the opinion that the school authorities are providing impressive extra study material to help students develop an overall personality. “We, as parents, are grateful to the class teachers for their wonderful efforts. We are sure school will take all the steps for timely completion of the course curriculum,” added Dhillon.
