Happy 60th Birthday, my sweet loving grandmother.
It has always felt fitting to call you Kamala mummy; grandma doesn’t quite describe your role in my life.
You’ve been there for me since the day I was born (literally) and I’ve felt only pampered and spoiled by you ever since. In so many hard moments in my life, you’ve played such a transformative role.
There will never be enough words for me to honor and appreciate you properly, but I hope you will let me try.
When I think of you three words come to mind first:

You are the most resilient person I know. The number of challenges you have faced in your life is ridiculous. I am just in awe of how someone could go through so many crises still be so loving, peaceful, and devout.
Just yesterday you shared with me how difficult it was to lose your 21 - year- old son, your closest brother, your son-in-law, to see your husband become paralyzed and eventually losing him. That you’ve watched your own children face incredible, crushing suffering. You yourself almost died in a botched surgery. You also shared that while you’ve realized that everything is impermanent, the one thing that you continue to live for is serving others.
When you speak about the challenges in your life, you only bring inspiration to everyone around you.
In your life, you have given and given and given. It brings me to tears to know how much you have prioritized everyone else around you. You rarely ask for anything special but are always checking in with others, loved ones, and strangers alike, to see what they need in their life.
Whether it’s taking a neighbor to their doctor appointments, generously aiding your maid’s family, or feeding the stray dogs in the area (even though you’re afraid of them), you are constantly thinking about folks other than yourself.
At our home in Illinois, you’ve always taken care of little things so that mom, Nirali, and I can focus on our goals. Things like packing Nirali’s food, folding my laundry, or making mom aloe vera juice. You are the underlying force that has led to so much of the success we’ve found. After dad passing you travelled hours with mom every week, prayer beads in hand, to help her get through the days as she started filling his shoes.
