My DearFriend
You will be delighted to know how Diwali one of our most famous and sacred festivals, is celebrated in India.
This festival falls in the month of October or in the beginning of November on a new moon night. It is celebrated with great pomp and show in the memory of Lord Rama's return to Ayodhya after fourteen years of exile.
People start cleaning their houses a week before the festival. They get their shops and houses white-washed. They decorate their houses and shops with pictures, flowers and toys. There is a good sale of sweets, toys, pictures, crackers and utensils on this day. People exchange gifts and sweets.
In the evening people illuminate their houses and shops. Lamps and candles are placed in every corner of the house. People put on new clothes. Temples and government buildings are lighted. All cities look like dreamlands of lights. Children are very happy on this day and they burst crackers and play with fire-works.
At night all the members of the family sit together to worship 'Laxmi', the goddess of wealth. They pray for health, wealth and
happiness. I look forward to this festival every year.
