How do you write a letter to your uncle who stays abroad and tell him three reasons why you don't want to study in Nigeria?

I’m going to guess that this is a school/class assignment. As someone who has written my fair share of such letters, i would start by explaining a few things.

There are 3 main types of letters according to the Ghanaian education syllabus(I can’t vouch for other countries) and they are:

Formal letter: An official letter. It is a letter written for official reason. A formal letter is written for different purposes eg. Make a complaint, request something, apply for a job etc.

Semi-Formal letter: A Semi-formal letter is type of that is sent to someone you know, but do not share cordial relationship with. It is used in a non-formal relationship but which requires polite and respectful approach eg. teacher, older neighbours, older family members, landlord, etc. The surname should be used when addressing them – Dear Mrs. James, Dear Mr Jones. (this is where your letter type falls in).

Informal letters: An informal letter is a letter that is written in a personal fashion. You can write them to relatives or friends, but also to anyone with whom you have a non-professional relationship, although this doesn't exclude business partners or workers with whom you're friendly.

Now, onto your question: How do you write a letter to your uncle?

First, start with the Address and date.

Address and date are placed on the top right of the page. Date should be written in DD, Month, YYYY format.

Then you move onto the Salutation:

You should greet the person with Dear [Title] Last name. Title varies depending on the status of the person. So unmarried girl hold a Miss title, marries women Mrs. Title, man should be saluted with Mr. , while women which marriage status is unknown Ms. If the person is your close, older Uncle, you can write “Dear Uncle Ike.”

The next step, is to move to The Body of the letter:

The Body is segmented into at most 5 paragraphs.

Explanation, reason for writing: I am writing this letter because, I am writing this letter in response to, etc.

First point with details: Reason why you cannot study in Nigeria. (stick to one point only)

Second point/ reason.

Third point/reason.

Conclusion: Closing paragraph eg. I hope this is acceptable…, I hope you understand…, I hope by the above reasons…etc.

The final step, is the Signing Off:

The most acceptable one is “Yours Sincerely” although “Best Regards” can also be accepted.

Each paragraph should be indented at the beginning.

The Style Used:

This is the main feature that distinguishes formal form semi-formal letters. In semi – formal letters language used is similar to ordinary speech. Therefore you may use even exclamation marks and ask personal questions however, jargons and shortened words are not allowed
