Here’s what you need to know to minimize chances of being infected by cold, flu and coronaviruses. Infection occurs when virus particles are inhaled through the nose. The first sign of infection is a runny nose. Usually this is accompanied by sneezing, which expels virus droplets into the air to infect others. People can spread the virus before they realize that they are infected.
To avoid a possible infection when near someone who has sneezed, one must hold their breath and move away. Washing hands and using sanitizers will not keep someone from being infected by the inhalation of virus particles. Wearing a mask is not protective because virus particles can be inhaled through the mask.
To prevent the spread of viruses, two things must be done. Sneezers must open their mouths so less air goes through the nose to expel virus droplets, and they must sneeze into the crook of the elbow so virus droplets don’t go into the air.
Virus particles can remain suspended in the air long after a sneezer is gone, so one should avoid crowds, especially if sneezers are present. Also note that ventilation systems can spread airborne viruses because they lack virus filters. Air travel could be hazardous. Minimize risk by shopping early or on rainy days.
