Rabindranath Tagore was a great poet, patriot, philosopher, humanist and painter. He was born on 7 May 1861 in Jor-Sanka, Calcutta, in his ancestral residence in the house of Maharishi Devendranath Tagore and Sarada Devi. He was the 14th child of his parents though different from the others. He received his proper education and knowledge about various subjects at home by private teachers. When Rabindra was very young, he started writing poetry and some of them were also printed in magazines.
He went to England for higher education but was not satisfied with the traditional system of education there and he returned to India and opened his own school named Shantiniketan at Bolpur in Veerbhum, Bengal. This school later became college and then a university (Visva-Bharati). In 1913, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for “Gitanjali”. He was also honored with the Nightwood by the British Crown but returned the honor in protest against the massacre at Jallianwala Bagh.
