Different layers of soil are called soil horizons and the cross sectional arrangement of these layers in soil is called soil profile. Each layers of soil have different texture and color, different depth and varying chemical composition. A soil profile is a vertical cross-section of the soil, made of layers running parallel to the surface. These layers are known as soil horizons. The soil is arranged in layers or horizons during its formation. These layers or horizons are known as the soil profile.

Soil Profile - The soil profile is a vertical section of the soil which depicts all the layers of

the soil. The soil consists of distinct layers which are of different colour, texture, depth and

chemical composition are referred to as horizons of the Soil.

1. Horizon A

• This layer is also called the topsoil and provides shelter to many living organisms as well like insects, worms, beetles, rodents and moles.
• It contains large amounts of humus and minerals which makes it dark in colour.
• The topsoil has a soft texture and can retain water easily.

2. Horizon B or Middle Layer or Sub-Soil

• It is the next layer of the soil which does not contain much humus.
• The minerals are found in large quantities in this layer.
• This layer has a hard texture, light colour and is more compact than the topsoil.

3. Horizon C or Third Layer

• It is the third layer of the soil present below B horizon.
• It consists of small rocks with cracks in them. These rocks are partly weathered.

3. Bedrock

• The last layer of the soil is called the Bedrock which contains large pieces of rocks that are not weathered or exposed to any winds or water.
• Bedrock cannot be dug with the help of a spade. It is very hard in texture.
