The political symbol of broken chain was used during the French Revolution by the peasants and third class persons and also slaves.

The broken chain depicts freedom from the slavery. As is known, the first and second class in the french society were the priviliged ones and they treated the third class people as their slaves and workers. So, after the french revolution broke out and people started to revolt against the French Government, this symbol of broken chain was used by them to show that they no more will be slaves to the upper class people.

Answer:

It signifies freedom from Slavery. In terms of the French Revolution, the broken chain signified freedom for the peasants and the third estate i.e. normal people as opposed to the aristocracy.

The reason why this is called broken chains was when the people who were captured during the French revolution they were chained for instance so when they were released it is linked with the broken chain that they were released from the chains or the chains were broken and they became free that day.
