“No. This cannot be happening,” I muttered to myself as I stared at what was right before my bespectacled eyes. I had been marooned on a deserted island. The ship I was in had run aground.
The sun shone brilliantly and the high clouds drifted across the clear blue sky. My hands felt clammy. I tried looking for any signs of human activity but there was nobody in sight. The thought of being all alone sent shivers down my spine.
Being positive, I decided to go in search of food for myself. Arriving at the entrance of the jungle twenty minutes later, I was trembling like a leaf and my heart pounded wildly as I staggered uninhabited jungle on the island. An hour of combing the jungle proved fruitless as I found nothing edible. Just as I was about to give up hope, I spotted a comb of green bananas. They were ripe and juicy. At that juncture, I was agog with excitement and burst into a broad grin. My day had been saved! Or so I had thought. Regaining my composure, I picked up some large earth-coloured stones, which were lying on the ground. I began throwing them in a desperate attempt for the bananas to fall on to the ground so that I may consume. Due to poor concentration and insufficient energy, I missed my target twice. Fortunately, I was third time lucky!
Rushing over to the spot where the bananas had fallen to the ground, I began devouring my food ravenously like a predator to its prey. Gulping down the last of the bananas, I headed in the direction of the meandering river which I had passed by earlier. The water was extremely refreshing that day. I gulped it down. Quenching my thirst, I then spotted an amazing sight before me. A black bear was on the opposite side of the river. It was also drinking water. Amazed, I stood rooted to the ground, mouth hanging open and eyes widening in surprise. A few minutes later and I decided to move on before the black bear spotted me and I turn into an emancipated corpse.
As night approached, I searched high and low for a place to rest after an eventful day. There was a cave near the beach, and I decided that it would make an excellent temporary ‘home’ for me. It was 10 o’clock and my beady eyes grew heavy with each passing minute. Before I knew it, I drifted into Dreamland in the blink of an eye.
When I woke up the next day, it dawned upon me that I had not been dreaming and that this island could possibly be my home for the next few days, months or even decades. The though of it sent shivers down my spine.
Just as I thought I was never ever going to be found and that I would die on this deserted island all by myself, my ears heard a helicopter. I was intoxicated with excitement, as I knew I would be saved. It was indeed true! I was so wild with excitement that I took off my clothes and waved frantically at them. I was simply too elated that I passed out.
On regaining consciousness, I saw my parents’ grinning faces. They must have been worried sick about me. As the helicopter flew back to Singapore, I knew we would never travel on a ship ever again for a long time to come. That night I stormed the heavens in thanksgiving for my safe return to salvation.
