However scientists did discover a PET-eating bacterium in a landfill recently. This suggests that maybe in the long run nature adapts to waste plastics and can evolve bacteria that digest a particular type of plastic. Perhaps in the future it will be possible to synthesize those bacteria and use them to clean-up plastics in the environment.
