This one happened in the year 2008, at Chennai, India. I was in a public transit Bus, during the 7.5 hour ordeal, which is usually a 1 hour to 1:15 hour travel.

I usually take the train or bus to home from office. The convenience with bus is I need not change to any other bus, and I can just walk home after getting down. Train is way faster but I will have to change to a bus for a short trip to home, and I should have taken it that day.

It was the day before Deepavali (Diwali) and I logged off at 5.05 PM. I left straight to the bus bay to get the shuttle to public transit Bus stop. It was my lucky day, as an “Express" bus and an Air conditioned Bus to my home was already at the stop.

I jumped down from my office shuttle and got into the Express Bus as I thought Express will be quicker. In retrospect, A/C bus would have been a better option

It was the day before the Deepavali and the party ruling the state government had decided that was the perfect day to strike against the neighbouring state Govt. There had been public demonstrations and road blocks all along the city.

People leaving city to their home town for the festival added traffic more than normal. There was moderate rain as well, which messed up things more, as the roads were flooded in many parts of the city.

I crossed almost half the distance in usual time and when I was getting a glorious view of the Airport to my left, from the top of a flyover, I turned to look ahead of the bus just to see red brake lights for as far as my eye can see.

From that point it took more than 6 hours and 45 mins to cover the remaining 10 KMs. It passed midnight and people even started wishing “Happy Diwali” in the bus to one another.

Here comes the shocker. I log back in after the weekend and what do I see? An email from HR at 5:07 PM on that day stating - There was reports of massive traffic on roads and had asked employees living in the city to preferably travel home by Train.

Answer:

Traffic jam is the situation when vehicles are stopped completely for some time period on the roads. Also, vehicles have to wait for a long time to move out of the jam. Sometimes it becomes like congestion in traffic. This happens in transport network due to the increasing vehicles and overuse of roads. Often it is due to slow speed, longer trip time and increased queues of vehicles. Therefore, traffic jam is becoming a major issue mostly in all cities.
