Seven people were killed and fifteen others seriously injured in a bus accident in Dakshin Dinajpur on December 27, 2017 at 12:45 p.m. The state owned bus collided with a truck parked mistakenly on the side of the road. The speeding bus was trying to overtake another bus from the wrong side and owing to poor visibility the driver failed to see the park truck. 5 people died on the spot whereas two others succumbed to injuries in the hospital.
The deceased have been identified as Mukesh Banerji, Satya Roy, Mhd. Abbas, and Abhishek Chaterji, and Sudharshan from Dakshin Dinajpur; Pankaj and Subroto from Dhanbad. The injured have been hospitalized in the nearby hospitals. The police have registered a case negligent driving against the absconding truck driver. The state transport minister has announced compensation of rupees 200000/- to the families of deceased ones and rupees 50000/- to the families of injured ones.

A horrible bus accident took place at Murshidabad in West Bengal. The bus toppled over Balurghat bridge under Do police station. The driver of the bus, carrying 56 people, was speaking on his cell phone while driving even refusing to heed to repeated pleas by passengers not to do so. An eyewitness said that a truck came close to the bus perilously and desperate to avoid the truck, the bus swerved to the right and fell over the bridge. The local people spotted 14 dead bodies and 23 were severely injured. The ambulances were called immediately. After sometime police reached the spot. An investigation committee was set up to find the real culprit.
The chief minister Mamata Banerjee announced an extra gratia payment of RS 5 lacs to the dead person's families and RS 1 lac to the injured.
